Back-to-school season is an exciting time for both parents and kids, but it can be tough on family budgets. Between classroom supplies, clothes, sports, and other extracurricular activities, the costs add up quickly. With some planning, you can keep spending under control and start the year stress-free. Here are 5 tips to help parents budget for the new school year!
1. Set a Budget Before You Shop
Decide how much you can spend and then divide it into categories like supplies, clothing, technology, and extracurriculars. Having a plan in place before you start shopping helps you avoid overspending!
2. Take Stock of What You Already Have
Check last year’s supplies, backpacks, and closets before you start buying new items. Reusing what you already own saves money for essentials.
3. Make a Shopping List (and stick to it!)
Once you know what’s needed, write it down! Sticking to a list keeps you focused when you’re out and about shopping for supplies and prevents impulse buys.

4. Shop Smart and Look for Deals
Compare prices online and in-store, take advantage of sales, and consider buying in bulk for items you’ll use year after year.
5. Spread Out Purchases
Kids don’t need a full new wardrobe on their first day – start with the basics and plan to add items throughout the year when sales pop up!

Back-to-school budgeting doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By setting limits, reusing what you can, and shopping strategically, you’ll keep expenses manageable and set your child up for success. Happy shopping!Â
